Welcome to the new O’Connell Schools’ PPU website.
As graduates of a School so closely associated with Blessed Edmund Rice and Daniel O’Connell, OCS pupils inherit a proud legacy and tradition deeply embedded in the ethos of Blessed Edmund – to provide a good education for all pupils, regardless of creed or financial circumstances.
The union represents a forum for the diaspora of past pupils to meet occasionally, and to maintain contacts with the School. Examples are our Annual Dinner, traditionally held in November, and our Annual Mass for deceased past pupils, which usually takes place in May. The Mass is celebrated in the School, and is followed by a short, enjoyable reception, giving past pupils and their family members an opportunity to chat and reminisce, while noting the many infrastructural changes in OCS over the decades. For many years, Scoil Ui Conaill Football and Hurling Club has provided a sporting and social outlet for past and present pupils, with a welcome for past pupils always provided at the clubhouse in Clontarf. Similarly, Old O’Connell’s Golf Society also welcomes past pupils, either as members or as visitors to its outings. I encourage past pupils to become involved in the activities of either of these sports groups, whose roots are so deep in the famous red, yellow and blue!
The PPU is very supportive of the School, and maintains a close relationship with Gerry Duffy, Principal of the Secondary School. Financial support from the PPU is ongoing, particularly for the increasing number of current pupils from under-privileged backgrounds. This is living proof of the continuation of the Blessed Edmund Rice ethos, and helps O’Connell’s to ensure that education is provided for pupils regardless of creed or financial circumstances.
With the launch of this website,, I feel its important to acknowledge the voluntary work put into its development by a variety of past pupils. The work, however, is only beginning! The website will require continued input and regular updating, in order to maintain interest. Any past pupils interested in contributing on matters relating to the PPU or the School, may do so trough the PPU committee. Content may be of local, national or international interest. We now have a golden opportunity for past pupils of OCS, both at home and abroad, to maintain communications, not only between ourselves, but also with our Alma Mater. Any suggestion or ideas may be sent to our Hon Secretary, Paddy Coyle, firstname.lastname@example.org, and they will be passed on to our website volunteers.
Finally, I look forward to meeting many of you at our 2014 Dinner in the Gresham Hotel, on Friday, 21st November.
